NOTD: OPI/Nicki Minaj Metallic 4 Life

Let's get this straight: by no means am I a Nicki Minaj fan (though that boom badoom boom boom Superbass business can be a little addictive), but I love a good nail polish.

So, when I spotted a black nail polish with silver glitter in the OPI Nicki Minaj collection, I could barely contain my excitement. Do I feel it lives up to the hype though? Well...

Metallic 4 Life is a silver glitter, that combines smaller rounded and larger hexagonal particles in a black base.

In theory this should work well, but the actual application falls a bit short: the black base is very very sheer. The picture shows the nail polish after 3 coats and you can probably still see that the black is more of a darkened gray at places. Now, I don't really mind applying 3 coats of any nail polish, but imagine what 3 coats of glitter would mean when the time comes to take this off. Yes, not a happy hour.
In terms of longevity, this fails to impress as well: I got chips the very next day, though this is hardly news when it comes to OPI glitters.

All in all, a cute looking nail polish, but very mediocre (at best) when it comes to the formula. You can easily dupe the effect by applying your black creme of choice and adding a glitter on top, as I'd done in one of my first posts here.

Have you picked anything from the Nicki Minaj nail polish collection? Any recent nail polish purchases that failed to live up to the hype?

What's your opinion?

  4. Very nice manicure but that's too bad it chipped so easily and that it's very sheer :( I do the same thing nowadays as you suggested - instead of buying a nail polish colour with glitter in it, I just use a opaque base coat colour and apply some glitter as a top coat.
I was in the store yesterday and looked at some of the Nicki Minaj nail polishes but nothing really struck me. I have a ton of nail polishes to begin with so maybe that's why! LOL
Oh and you were saying that removing glitter polishes is a bit of a pain...and I know what you mean but have you heard of the "foil method"? You basically soak some cotton balls with nail polish remover, put some on each of your nails and wrap the soaked cotton on your nail in a piece of aluminum foil for 10-15 minutes. The layers of glitter come off very easily that way and I always do that method for removing lots of glitter polish :)

    1. @Karen Law: It is a pain to remove glitter isn't it? But the result is usually SO cute that it's worth the hassle! Yes, I do use the foil method when I feel like doing it properly, usually though I just soak the nail polish with a saturated cotton ball, sans aluminum foil!
PS: I can totally relate with you when it comes to my nail polish collection, it's huge, yet I keep buying! ://// xxx

    1. @Argyrousa: Aw, thank u sweetie! Nope, I haven't tried it with an OPI top coat (do u recommend it better than Seche?), but I had used OPI glitters with Seche Vite in the past, and I remember the results were disappointing as well! :( xx

  7. Well I picked 2 polishes from the Holland collection and loved both of them. But glitter polishes are a hit or miss for me as well. They last one I picked up was rainbow connection(OPI Muppets collection).
This one does look nice on your nails though. :)

    1. @Athina: Have you had any luck with the Muppets one? So far any OPI glitters I've tried, ended up chipping within the next day! I guess I should just consider it as a "special occassion" type of nail polish and call it a day! xx

  10. That's too bad about the sheerness and chipping! I'm a huge fan of glitter polishes by OPI, though I do find they come a bit loose off the nail after a few days (probably because I do an insane number of coats each time). I think I'll have to layer this one over a black base if I do ever pick it up :)

    1. @sleepandwater: Yes, that sounds like the sensible thing to do or just layer your glitter top coat of choice over your black creme and save yourself the $! ;) I ve had the same experience with OPI glitters as you, they just refuse to stay on the nails, don't they? :/

  11. Dare I say it looks fine in its sheerness? I mean, once you get over the fact it's not opaque, it's actually pretty interesting. Either that, or your photographing skills have beautified the actual result!

  12. @Evi: Υes, now that you mention it, it could pass as a "different" look, couldn't it? But I guess all glitters look great in the end (once you manage to zoom in on them of course)! xxx
